The aim of the Newbattle High School Mathematics Course is to focus on understanding and helping our pupils to become secure and confident with their knowledge of maths. We help pupils learn how to solve problems which require the use of mathematical knowledge and techniques.

We aim to give all pupils the chance to take an active role in every maths lesson. We do this through the use of high-quality active learning and teaching techniques, such as:

  • well planned curriculum, which builds pupils' understanding
  • collaborative tasks, where pupils work in small groups to discuss and solve maths problems
  • class discussions using higher-order questioning techniques
  • the use of mini-whiteboards to collect and discuss answers from every pupil in the class
  • practical activities such as measuring, and use of tills to teach money
  • enterprising tasks developing literacy and health and well being skills, such as our S1 and S3 Planet Maths challenge
  • use of ICT to enhance learning through use of Interactive Whiteboards in every lesson

Mini whiteboards are an important tool for formative assessmentThe Maths Course in S1, S2 and S3

In S1, S2 and S3 all pupils will attend maths for four periods every week. They will also experience numeracy in all other subjects across the curriculum. For full details, see the S3 Coursing Handbook.  This course delivers experiences and outcomes in S3, and will then prepare pupils for appropriate National Qualification at National 3, National 4 or National 5 in S4.

The S1, S2 and S3 courses cover all the key areas of Curriculum for Excellence, with a particular emphasis on developing a deep understanding of whole number, fractions, percentages and decimals as part of our Understanding Number Programme. This Understanding Number work covers the essentials of topics including place value, whole number calculations, fractions, decimals, percentages and negative numbers. These lessons make full use of mini-whiteboards, high-order questioning and group work in order to lead to deeper, more active, learning. Following on from the success of this work, we have now also introduced an Understanding Algebra project for S1-S6, which builds pupils' understanding of algebra at an appropriate rate.

Maths courses in S4, S5 and S6

In the Senior phase, pupils work on courses that lead towards National Qualifications at the end of S4, S5 and S6. Our courses will continue to progress pupils’ understanding of number, algebra, shape and measurement. We will explore how the ideas and concepts already learned are used in the world around us. Pupils will continue to use their understanding and knowledge to solve problems.

Mrs Hall's S2 maths classIn S4, all pupils will have three periods of maths each week. For full details of the courses available, see the S4 Coursing Handbook. Courses currently offered in the Maths department in S4 lead to awards in:

  • Applications of Mathematics (formerly known as Lifeskills Mathematics) at National 3, National 4 and National 5 levels.
  • Mathematics at National 5 level.

In S5 and S6, pupils can choose to take courses in the Maths department. Each course takes five periods per week. For full details of the courses available, see the S5/6 Coursing Handbook. Courses currently offered in the Maths department in S5 and S6 lead to awards in:

  • Applications of Mathematics (formerly known as Lifeskills Mathematics) at National 4 and National 5 levels.
  • Mathematics at National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher levels.
