The Art and Design Course in S1, S2 and S3
From S1 until the end of S3, all pupils will experience a broad general education where they will work across the experiences and outcomes of Curriculum for Excellence.
In S1, pupils will attend Art and Design for two periods per week. During this time, pupils will explore a wide range of media and problem solving in both Expressive and Design projects. This year also gives the pupils the opportunity to take part in community based projects such as producing materials for local events such as Gala Days and Christmas decorations. A short piece of written work will also be completed in S1 helping pupils to understand artists' methods and sources of inspiration whilst building on research and language skills.
S2 will see the pupils attending once a week where they will build on prior learning and explore more challenging tasks. A range of themes will be explored allowing the pupils to have a deeper awareness of Art and Design around the world. There will also be a focus on inter-disciplinary learning through the S2 Charles Rennie Mackintosh project with CDT. S2 pupils can also choose to take one extra period per week of Art and Design as part of Peak Performance, where they can expand their Art and Design experience.
In S3, pupils are given the opportunity to choose which two of the Expressive Arts they wish to specialise in. For full details of the choices available, see the S3 Coursing Handbook. Courses in S3 will deliver experiences and outcomes, which will prepare pupils for appropriate National Qualifications in S4.
In S3, the Art and Design course will allow pupils to explore a wide range of creative techniques and skills providing them with the building blocks to become independent and thoughtful learners with the ability to explore personal themes and projects. S3 will see the pupils cover a range of Expressive disciplines such as, portrait, still life and landscape, whilst learning to handle a wide range of media, drawing and painting techniques. Pupils will also thoroughly explore design, learning to develop ideas, experiment with a range of materials, and create mood boards for different themes. They will have the opportunity to problem solve a wide range of design briefs such as costume, graphics, animation and product design. In order to deepen their understanding of both Design and Expressive art, pupils will explore the work of artists and designers within the context of small research projects and presentations related to themes and projects undertaken in class. The course prepares pupils for qualifications in Art & Design at National 3, 4 or 5 in 4th Year.
Art and Design courses in S4, S5 and S6
In the Senior phase, pupils work on courses that lead towards National Qualifications at the end of S4, S5 and S6.
In S4, pupils can choose to take courses in the Art and Design department. The full Art & Design course takes four periods per week, although it is also possible to take a 2 periods per week course offering an 'expressive unit' only. For full details of the courses available, see the S4 Coursing Handbook. Courses currently offered in the Art and Design department in S4 lead to awards in:
- Art and Design at National 3, National 4 and National 5 levels
In S5 and S6, pupils can choose to take courses in the Art and Design department. The full course takes five periods per week. For full details of the courses available, see the S5/6 Coursing Handbook. Courses currently offered in the Art and Design department in S5 and S6 lead to awards in:
- Art and Design at National 4, National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher level.
This course will allow pupils to become creative thinkers and independent learners through a series of projects exploring a wide range of themes and skills. All projects will see the pupils learning a range of skills on which they can then build and expand on as they progress through the levels. As the pupils gain experience and confidence they will explore more personal themes for both Design and Expressive disciplines. Pupils will have access to a wide variety of good quality materials during their Art and Design course. This will include a range of paint and drawing materials as well as resources for projects such as costume and millinery. The department has several computers with full colour printers, scanners and Photoshop software. Most recently we introduced animation software and we are also keen to add Creative Industries and Photography in the near future. Pupils will be asked for a small financial contribution towards final outcomes to ensure that ideas are always presented at the highest possible standard.
S5/6 pupils can also choose to take one extra period per week of Art and Design as part of Peak Performance where they can build on their leadership skills.
